"The real values of culture can be maintained only by actually negating culture" (Debord, chapter 8, 210).
| UnderGround by Linda Streicher |
The reading "The Society of the Spectacle" by Guy Debord was really interesting. Throughout the book, he speaks about how society has an obsession with image. In today's society, we have different views on things. The two chapters I chose were six and eight. Chapter six is about Spectacular Time and chapter eight is about Negation and Consumption within Culture.
In Linda Streicher's work, "UnderGround," she evaluates the power of the Earth by placing us into a deeper view of Earth. She lives in New Jersey and her house uses the well water system.
Contaminants that are both natural and unnatural are collected in the groundwater just like shown up top. There is a maze underground where water passes. However, we as people take earth and life for granted. We do not think that the soil and deeper layers of the planet provide water for us and we abuse the upper ground.
