Carrie Mae Weems

"It is only with a foundation of trust that a society can exist. We must be able to walk down the street without fear..." p.223, Finkelstein. I chose this quote because it is something that I feel I connect with because it applies to my generation and past generations as well. Trust is indeed the only thing that keeps today's society together. In the past, men were the sole providers of the family and the women took care of all the household and family matters. The family trusted that the father would be there to meet their financial needs and the mother would take care of them. Trust worked around the kitchen table because that is where almost every event in the household took place. In my selfie, I re-invented it revealing my youth and just had myself in the selfie alone to show that in my generation, young girls have had to take the mother role soon and without help from their partner. Children are growing up in single homes without their fathers while their mothers try their very best to raise them. Most of their fathers or sons died before their time either due to drugs, gangs or police brutality which makes parents of the African american community leave in fear slowly losing their trust in their environment and government. In Carrie Mae Weems work, she does reveal the roles the women take up in the absence of their husband. It is a big burden but bigger when their absent completely.
