The Spectacle

Guy Debord’s, “Society of the Spectacle” is an interesting read. His discusses how society becomes obsessed with image. Despite that, he wrote this from a different time era; his messages and themes are very much relevant in todays society. Today, we are living in the age of social media, social media has become a part of our everyday routine. According to Debord, ““Though separated from what they produce, people nevertheless produce every detail of their world with ever-increasing power. They thus also find themselves increasingly separated from that world. The closer their life comes to being their own creation, the more they are excluded from that life.” In other words, we are obsessed with the persona that we created for ourselves in the digital world. We are not truly connected with our real world, which it is making us less human.

Deborah Sperry’s "The Ark Project" piece is interesting because from a far it looks like a melting ice glacier; even though it is not a glacier it represented how the ice in the arctic is melting causing higher water levels. In my portrait, I wanted to portray how glaciers are melting due to hot weather. I made myself transparent to represent how I’m not really paying attention on what is going on in other parts of the world, but I am still affected by it.
