Lotte Jacobi was a German artist who studied photography in Europe until 1935 when she fled from Nazi Germany. Between the years of 1935-1955, she had a studio in New York where she created images that were famously known for their casual, natural, and unpretentious style. Jacobi also did a famous photo shoot for Albert Einstein and other people who were well known during her time. I came across her work while searching for self portrait artists who are women, what stuck out to me is of course how natural Jacobi's photos were. In my attempt to recreate Lotte Jacobi's work, I decided to capture myself in my natural form. I think that is important because people (especially women) hesitate or choose not to take unflattering photos so I feel that it is empowering when they do. This is what women look like, not like the models on magazines or on social media. We are human, we work hard, we do not always look our best, and that is ok.
