The subject of this image reflects the movement of women empowerment and the vibrancy that these feminist artists make in the world . My piece is a combination of a self portrait, lively colors, and feminist symbols. The content of my image is focused to project rage, gender inequality, and social issues women face on a daily basis. Creating a self portrait should be more than just features, hair, and the regular face projected to the world. Society may perceive me as a young, Latina, and light skinned woman, but I am much more than just skin color, ethnicity, or my age. Behind outside features are ideas, curiosity, beliefs, and perceptions of the world that not many can relate too. Everyone observes the world differently, through this project the public will not only look at me, but also at how the world looks through my consciousness. This image should convey to viewers the feeling of being trapped in a patriarchal society, a fight for inclusion, and the desire for a world of serenity without chaos.
Although, this peace will be loud, it will also express the beauty of a silent world without prejudice, racism, and separation. The inspiration for my self portrait has been mostly influenced by Freida Khalo, The Guerilla Girls, and Annegret Soltau who have amazing pieces that express a significant amount of meaning. Their creative use of images, photography, and paintings is what assisted me in the creative production of my piece. Planning a self portrait that includes a combination of images, social justice issues, and my personal approach on understanding the world is a challenge. Through the use of a canvas, magazine images, paint, brushes, and best artistic skills which are not very advanced, my self portrait will soon come to life. This project will be a representation of my personal female perspective on social justice issues, but it will also portray the peace and tranquillity my mind desires from the world. There are many difficulties, obstacles, discrimination, and social injustice in the world. Society separates, targets, and attacks many groups of people, but that does not justify the actions of the way people behave towards others. These particular problems I wish to address through my art piece may never be resolved, but every small act of resistance against them contributes towards the cause.
