In this image, I wanted to represent two different subjects. First, it represents the destruction of nature due to money. Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. But due to the desire of having more money, the ecosystems are being over-exploited and destroyed.
Second, I am representing myself. After coming to the US, I started feeling too much pressure from this culture about money. My goals were not based on money, even though money is necessary, it wasn’t my big purpose in life. But, here, I feel that money is trying to “catch me” and becoming my main goal.
In the image, I used a wave of dollars trying to cover nature. The wave represents money and nature represent me and Colombia.
I wanted to do something similar to Frida’s self-portrait Along the Border Line Between Mexico and the United States, but I wanted to show that the two countries (in this case Colombia) are not completely separate and that the US has a big influence in Colombia.
I think this image transmit how due to money, nature is being destroyed.
For this image, I used the idea of a collage and used colored pencils.
