Alma, Silueta en Fuego (Soul, Silhouette on Fire) (still) 1975
For this week's selfie I was heavily influenced by one of Ana Mendieta's burning silhouettes entitled Alma, Silueta en Fuego (Soul, Silhouette on Fire) (still) 1975. Mendieta's earth/body sculptures are a way for her to feel one with the earth. She felt disconnected from her roots of Havana. She found a sense of belonging in these silhouettes. I believe Mendieta set fire to her silhouettes to symbolize the renewal of life through the warmth of flames. She could have felt like she was being reborn into the earth every time she created a sculpture. I wanted to do my own take on this silhouette and burning symbolization. I live in Jersey City, which is an urban area. It is also a state that experiences all four seasons. The snow today gave me the idea to create a snow angel because it would be an easy way to create my own silhouette. The snow is something that I connect where I'm from with. I couldn't actually set it on fire so I tried to use an app on my phone to create the effect. Seeing my own shape carved into the ground felt like a symbol to me about being one with the world and the fire would renew it.
