Week 1: Cindy Sherman

The photo that I picked was “Untitled” Country Girl. The reason for this photo it captures this unsettling feeling in the photograph. I tried to recreate that same feeling. There is also this humor that I find very enjoyable. The photograph is very ugly at the same time pretty. It is considered ugly due to how the face is making an odd expression that is not really considered beautiful. What makes it beautiful is how interesting the face it is a form of unconventional beauty.

Creating the same facial feature was somewhat difficult to execute. It was difficult due to me laughing and breaking character each take. Once I was able to get the take I uploaded it to Photoshop. In the original photograph it is black and white and the background was a little burled. First I desaturated the photo making it completely black and white. Then I intensified the shadows to make it darker. So the shadows on my face are more visible like in the original. Then I added an effect to make the lighter parts of my face visible. When I was done with that I burled that background to create the same light effect in the original picture.

Viewing Cindy Sherman’s various collections really made me appreciate Sherman as an artists. I admire how involved she is in her process. As artists we don’t really take the time to evaluate our process when it comes to creating any type of content, we just do. Sherman is a skilled photographer, her black and white portraits really resonated with me. What I enjoy about her black and white photographs, how she is able to capture emotion with her photographs. Sherman is a contemporary artists, and I’m not really into contemporary art but I find her content interesting and creative. I find it interesting how she is the subject; each photograph she plays a different character. I find her very fascinating as an artist and photographer.
